Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 - Droll Stories/Hekabe

A double bill of Droll Stories & Hekabe, hosted by Grant MacEwan University. Droll Stories is based on the stories of Honore de Balzac, directed by Kenneth Brown and created by Theatre Arts students. Droll Stories is a series of short plays filled with laughter, romance and intrigue. Balzac was a great admirer of medieval French stories that were folk tales along the lines of Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales or Giovanni Boccaccio's The Decamero. Hekabe, directed by Dave Horak, is a Euripides tragedy originally written in 424 BC and translated by contemporary Canadian poet Anne Carson. Taking place after the Trojan War, the play is a searing portrait of Hekabe, the Queen of Troy, and the revenge she takes over the loss of a son. Now a prisoner of war and a slave to the Greeks, Hekabe is forced to face the ultimate injustice.

Nippon, Japan, was an island empire and lived for centuries in perfect peace undisturbed by intruders from across the sea. That is, until an American fleet arrived threatening their civilization of tradition and serenity with foreign traders, fussy visitors, and pushy diplomats. Some Japanese resisted, while others embraced the Westerners and assimilated. The musical's original Broadway production in 1976 was nominated for 10 Tony Awards. The score is widely considered to be one of Stephen Sondheim's finest, including songs such as Prologue, Four Black Dragons, Lion Dance, Pretty Lady, and Next.

Roby Lakatos – also referred to as a gypsy violinist or “devil’s fiddler” – is a rare musician who defies all definition. He is a jazz improviser, composer, arranger, and scorching performer. His stylistic versatility is unmatched as he effortlessly mixes classical and jazz with the magic of Hungarian-gypsy idioms.

Ticket prices range from $24 – $79 (agency fees apply), and are available through the Winspear Centre Box Office. Purchase by phone at (780) 428-1414 or 1-800-563-5081, or online at www.EdmontonSymphony.com.
